Rolfing
What is Rolfing?
The name "Rolfing" comes from Dr. Ida P. Rolf, the founder and creator of modern structural integration. Rolfing uses hands-on and perceptual interventions to improve clients’ posture and relationship to gravity. Rolfing involves direct and indirect pressure into the body's fascial web, a web of connective tissue which surrounds all muscles, joints, bones, organs and ligaments. It includes movement re-education intended to help clients break free from patterns of restriction that affect daily movement and activities. Rolfing is holistic in its methods, and Rolfing practitioners aim to work with clients overth course of several weeks or months to help create lasting changes in the body. A hallmark of the Rolf Method is “The Ten Series,” a course of ten sequential sessions that slowly work through the fascia of the entire body. This system of ten sessions helps reduce patterns of tension and strain that can reduce mobility over time. The Ten Series helps clients reorganize and realign their tissues in order to improve posture and help clients move with more efficiency and ease.

Most Rolfing sessions follow a similar format. We start with a body reading, during which I will assess my client’s posture and watch them walk or do some small knee bends. Sometimes I may call for other small movements to assess range and ease of motion. Then we discuss any areas of interest or injuries/pain. I want to make sure every client feels that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Then I ask my client to lie down on the massage table and I begin my structural work. Common Rolfing positions on the table include lying face up, side lying - for which I provide lots of pillows, and face down - for which I provide a face cradle for optimal comfort. There are always lots of blankets available in the studio so my clients feel warm and comfortable, as well as a table warmer. After the session, we may finish with seated bench work focusing on sitting education, easing tension around the spine, and head and neck alignment.

I ask clients to wear whatever is most comfortable for them. Rolfing works best when the practitioner can contact bare skin, so most clients choose to wear either a sports bra and loose fitting shorts or a tank top. Dr. Ida Rolf administered her structural work to clients wearing only their underwear, and this is always an option for clients. I prefer clients to wear loose fitting comfortable clothes made of natural fibers, and to undress or remain clothed to their level of comfort once arriving in the studio.
